IRS temporarily stops mailing notices

August 24, 2020

The IRS has suspended the mailing of three notices – the CP501, the CP503 and the CP504 – that go to taxpayers who have a balance due on their taxes.

The temporary adjustment to processing helps to lessen any possible confusion as the IRS reduces its backlog of unopened mail due to coronavirus-related closures.

The IRS will continue to assess its mail inventory to determine the appropriate time to resume the follow-up notices. The agency still encourages taxpayers who have not yet responded to their CP14 balance due notice to promptly respond.
