The IRS has recalled almost 10,000 employees to return to their offices this week, according to an internal memo sent April 25.
Returning employees are those needed to continue mission-critical operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are required to wear their own face coverings.
While the IRS is currently asking for employees to volunteer to come back and offering incentive pay, the agency will order employees back to work if there are not enough volunteers, the president of the National Treasury Employees Union told Politico.
