Watch out for cyberthreats on social media

March 6, 2020

Cyberthieves are after your information, and they’re using social media to get it.

Worldwide, social media-enabled crimes generate at least $3.25 billion in the global crime economy, according to one cybersecurity firm’s 2019 report. An estimated 1.3 billion social media users have had their data compromised within the last five years.

Cyberthieves have multiple ways of accessing important information on social media, including malware disguised as advertisements, viral memes or connection requests. Cyberthieves can also use seemingly harmless quizzes on social media to gain a user’s personal information.

CFOs and administrators who are close to items of value, such as a company’s consumer data, are increasingly being targeted. No defense is impenetrable, but strong cybersecurity policies can go a long way in ensuring companies have protection against cyberthreats.
