The IRS recently released the Criminal Investigation Division’s (CI) annual report, which highlights significant successes and criminal enforcement actions taken in fiscal year 2019. Key focuses of the report include cybercrime, traditional tax invasion, international tax enforcement, employment tax, refund fraud and tax-related identity theft.
CI is the only federal law enforcement agency with jurisdiction over federal tax crimes. Of the 2,485 cases initiated in 2019, CI spent 75% of its time on tax-related investigations and achieved a 91.2% conviction rate for all investigations.
The interactive 2019 report (PDF) summarizes a wide variety of CI activity during the year and features case examples from each field office. The report also commemorates CI’s 100th anniversary as a law enforcement agency.
