The Social Security Administration (SSA) says a “processing error” made in January is responsible for insurance premiums not being deducted from the Social Security payments of about 250,000 Medicare beneficiaries.
As a result, some Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans did not get paid for as many as five months. The error was discovered in May.
Social Security and Medicare say the proper deductions and payments to insurers will resume this month or next. Meanwhile, some seniors may have to come up with the money to pay the in-arrears amounts to the insurance plans themselves, and others may receive cancellation notices.
