In these days of rising fraud and identity theft, some conveniences must go by the wayside. One of these is the way the IRS has handled tax transcript availability.
In an effort to stem personal identity theft, as of June 28, the IRS will stop faxing tax transcripts to taxpayers, tax practitioners and third parties who request them. The agency will also stop mailing transcripts to third parties. Taxpayers will be able to obtain tax transcripts through the IRS website, calling the IRS or submitting a form. Tax practitioners will have a more circuitous route.
