The IRS and the Security Summit partners announced new results showing major progress in the fight against tax-related identity theft.
The number of taxpayers who reported identity theft dropped 71 percent between 2015 and 2018. The IRS and the Security Summit collaborated with others in both the private and public sectors to combat identity theft by adding extra processes to protect taxpayers.
Although the efforts have been successful, the IRS and Security Summit partners will continue to work together to combat the ongoing threats. Identity thieves will continue to change their targets and tactics. Two persistent areas of concern are business identity theft and data theft from tax professionals.
