Tax season sees record refunds of $179B so far

April 2, 2025

The IRS has sent more than 55.7 million refunds to taxpayers totaling nearly $179.5 billion thus far this tax season, an increase of 1.3% and 5.9%, respectively, from last year.

The average tax refund amount is 4.6% higher — and $140 more — this tax season than at this time last year, according to data released by the IRS in late March.

The total number of tax returns the agency has received is down 1.1% from this time last year — 80,470,000 in 2024 versus 79,616,000 in 2025.

But that number is expected to rise in the next couple of weeks leading up to the April 15 federal tax filing deadline. See the IRS statistics.
