IRS increases special per diem rate for business travel

The IRS will increase the special per diem rates that a taxpayer uses for travel and business expenses starting Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The per diem rates will be $319 for travel to high-cost locations and $225 for travel to low-cost areas, the IRS said.

Every year, the IRS announces special per diem rates taxpayers can use to substantiate the amount of expenses for lodging, meals and incidental expenses when traveling away from home.

Under the meal and incidental expenses-only substantiation method, per diem rates will be $86 for travel to any high-cost locality and $74 for travel to any other locality within the continental U.S., up from $74 and $64, respectively. Read more.
