The IRS has announced plans to expand the Direct File free tax filing system, making it a permanent option for future tax seasons.
The decision comes after a successful pilot program this year in 12 states, with over 140,000 taxpayers taking advantage of it.
The IRS aims to partner with all states interested in joining the program and gradually expand its scope to support the most common tax situations. The IRS will also explore options to expand support for claiming tax credits.
Direct File is seen as a critical tool to meet taxpayers' needs and strengthen the tax filing system. The program has already saved users $5.6 million in tax preparation fees, the IRS said. Learn more.
