IRS to digitize tax filing process by 2025

The IRS plans to digitize the tax filing process by 2025, allowing taxpayers to digitally submit all documents and correspondence, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday, Aug. 2.

The initiative is part of a $60 billion program to modernize systems and improve tax enforcement provided in last year’s Inflation Reduction Act.

By converting paper tax returns to digital documents, the IRS aims to eliminate the handling of up to 125 million paper documents per year.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen added that taxpayers will always have the choice to submit documents by paper. Read more.
