IRS lessens backlog, plans to resume collection notices

May 19, 2023

The IRS, which spent the pandemic years mired in backlogs of mail, says it has processed all paper and electronic individual returns received before January of this year.

As of April 29, the IRS said it had 3.8 million unprocessed individual returns. These include 2022 returns, 2021 returns that need review or correction and late filed prior-year returns.

Signaling that its operations are returning to normal, the IRS deputy commissioner for collection and operations support, Darren Guillot, recently said the agency plans to resume some collection notices.

The IRS has not yet set a start date for the resumption of the notices. Guillot estimated the agency will begin sending CP14 due notices to taxpayers from the end of May to early June. Learn more.
