IRS aims to reduce backlog by hiring 10K workers

March 10, 2022

The IRS plans to use an expedited hiring process to hire approximately 10,000 workers to help the agency reduce its backlog of millions of unprocessed tax returns and other mail from taxpayers, according to the leader of an IRS workforce union.

The National Treasury Employees Union recently reported the IRS now has direct hire authority for roughly 10,000 entry-level positions in submission processing and accounts management.

The new hiring authority is a welcome sign for the tax community. Last month, the AICPA commended the IRS on its plan to temporarily reassign some employees to help with the backlog but stressed the need for more relief measures.

The expedited hiring authority is reportedly scheduled to run through Dec. 31, 2023.
