Alerting clients to tax season scams

February 22, 2022

Tax season is a busy time for phone scammers. If clients report getting suspicious calls claiming to be from the government or a financial institution, help them identify the risks.

The FCC, FTC and IRS have resources and tips to help taxpayers prevent and avoid scams.

Individuals can register their phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, which allows them to opt out of telemarketing calls.

Keep in mind that when an unknown phone number calls you with a “local” area code, it does not necessarily mean it is a real local number.

If you choose to answer, immediately hang up if the caller asks you to press a button or reply with a “yes.” The scammer may be trying to record your answers for nefarious purposes.
