Be wary of fake charity scams during the holidays, IRS says

December 1, 2021

As part of its National Tax Security Awareness Week, the IRS is reminding taxpayers to wary of fake charities used by scammers to steal money and sensitive data.

During the holidays, scammers take advantage of the season of giving by setting up fake charities to trick unsuspecting donors into their plots to steal money and personal information.

The IRS urges potential donors to check the legitimacy of charities by using the agency’s Tax-Exempt Organization Search Tool.

As a reminder, individuals should never let any caller pressure them into giving their personal information. Taxpayers should also never trust a charity asking for donations through gift cards or money wiring.

If a client consults you about the legitimacy of a charity, share these tips for avoiding fake charity scams.
