During its 2021 Security Summit, the IRS urged tax professionals to learn the signs of data theft so they can quickly protect their clients.
The IRS reminded tax professionals they should contact the IRS immediately when there is an identity theft issue while also contacting insurance or cybersecurity experts to assign them the determining cause and extent of the loss.
The tell-tale signs of identity theft include rejected e-filed returns due to a client’s Social Security number already in use, more e-file acknowledgments received than returns filed and responses to emails the tax pros never sent. See more warning signs.
