Over the last two years, Wisconsin homeowners have seen a sharp rise in their property taxes.
According to a new report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum, these property tax increases are due to a variety of reasons, ranging from voter-approved school referenda and greater levies by municipalities and counties to make debt payments.
In fact, the report found that on December 2020 tax bills alone, property taxes statewide were more than $1.1 billion higher than they otherwise would have been because of successful voter referenda to allow school building projects and increased spending on operations.
This year, school levies rose by up to $136.1 million over the previous year due to referenda provisions taking effect. See the report.
