Beginning in January 2021, the IRS will expand its voluntary Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) program.
An IP PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent tax refund fraud on federal income tax returns. It helps the IRS verify a taxpayer's identity in Forms 1040, 1040(PR) and 1040-SS.
If a tax return is e-filed with a taxpayer’s Social Security number but an incorrect or missing IP PIN, the IRS e-file system will reject the return. Learn more.
